My son's preschool teacher had "animal posters" on her classroom wish list, so I bought this lovely book for that purpose. For some reason, it was much less expensive than the other books in the series (approximately a third of the price), which made it a great bargain.

Beautiful picture book full of interesting information about 30 different animals. My two sons (8 and 11) really loved this book. They have asked me to buy them some of the other books in the series.

As a 1st grade teacher, I am always trying to find fun non-fiction to bring into my classroom. This poster book is a lot of fun for my students. The posters tear out of the book. They feature an animal on the front and information about that animal on the back. They can easily be used for animal reports. The pictures are vivid and colorful and the kids love them. The posters are a little larger than a piece of construction paper.

My daughter wanted this book when her school was hosting a book fair, but they sold out before she could get one! But, Santa came through and brought it for her. She loves it, great photos and information on the back...it's a poster book so she's been wanting to take some out and hang them in her room...just a matter of time I think!

This is my students favorite poster book! We use it to write non-fiction articles. The children love the photos and constantly ask what will we write about next! They have learned so much from the interesting facts on the back of each photo.

I took out the photographs and laminated them to display on a wall for a creation themed party. The colors were still very vivid and the pictures are visually interesting. Everyone loved them.

Lying awake in bed at night, I can hear the passage of time as the carnage of war becomes less a digital celebration of modern entertainment ("Call of Duty" comes to mind), and slowly edges in to the dim light of life and death reality for my sons. I have lost friends to the war on terror. I have friends that are disfigured and disabled from a decade-long era of unending war. How do I guide my sons on such a vital matter in which I have precious little personal insight?Sunrise Over Fallujah may be a good starting point for this conversation. Myers seemingly presents a topically accurate accounting of one young man's experience in the recent era of unending conflict in the Middle East. While not exhaustive in scope, Myers quickly gets to the heart of the narrative of the American soldier as an architect of peace and rebirth rather than a one-dimensional warmonger.As good as Sunrise Over Fallujah is, it is remarkable both for what is included and what is excluded in the text. Myers necessarily includes combat, and its aftermath, in the narrative. Unlike the genre of first person shooters that most kids know and love, Sunrise Over Fallujah doesn't glorify the gore and mayhem that pervades military style shooters. But it also lacks a real examination of the emotional trauma of death and of killing. The narrative infers those consequences, but passes over them in only a shadow's substance. In so doing, Myers probably misses some opportunities to move beyond the nuance and introduce younger reader's to some hard realities. In the end, Myers produces a timely, and telling book that rightfully belongs on any YA "must read" list.

I use this in my Modern History class to discuss middle east conflicts. The students loved his Vietnam book and enjoy that this has brief mention back to that novel they read at the beginning of the year. I like that the language is not as strong, nor is the violence. However, it still gives an accurate portrayal.

This book brought tears to my eyes, especially the last couple chapters. It reminded me of what our young men and women go through not only physically but emotionally and spiritually as well. Anyone who does not appreciate, value, and honor them should be ashamed of themselves, regardless of their personal feelings concerning this war or any other! These courageous soldiers are protecting ALL of us!

If you've been paying attention to the news for the last several years, you'll recall that we're at war. These are US Army soldiers (a few Marines) who give their impressions of war and life in the military. Surprisingly, it's not positive and it's not negative. It's reality as they perceive it. Not even as their officers and non-coms wish them to perceive it; not even as their command structure or parents would like them to.The group of new soldiers, hardly-acquainted, inexperienced in combat, arrives in Kuwait and soon are ordered to the attack on the Hussein regime in Iraq. They step up to what they were trained to do. They are reluctant, afraid, conflicted and excited. They often surprise themselves, but they don't disappoint their leaders or their country. Be advised though: they have doubts, they have issues. These are your kids, or kids you taught in school, or sat beside in school, or ate burgers and birthday cake with. They have all that baggage and they bring it with them to Iraq. It's their filter as they fight and kill and try to do their best. It's kind of sad to watch them go through it, but they do and they pretty much succeed.Walter Dean Myers is a good writer. This is the first book by him for me, but it was an easy read. I liked that it was both honest and sincere.

I loved this book so much! It took me to places of happiness and sadness. It let me see what the army actually does and gave me so much more respect for them. 10/10 recommend!

The Rise of the Seminoles is nonfiction book that details Bobby Bowden's early years as head coach of Florida State's football program. The book focuses on the pivotal year of 1977 when Bowden's Seminoles achieve their first 10-win season. Each game is thoroughly looked into, from pregame drama, to game highlights.The book is fairly light and easy to read. It is about 276 pages long and the words are fairly big. It could easily be finished within a day or two. The book does provide a little bit of insight on Bobby Bowden both when he is being hired and when he was coerced into retirement. Both of of these sections of the book were the highlights for me because it provided me with the most unique information.This book covers primarily the 1977 season, which is fairly disappointing considering the title. I had high hopes that the book would go into more detail about Florida State's gradual rise into prominence with more information about the budding rivalry between the other major colleges: University of Florida and University of Miami. Recruiting battles, scandals, championships were all a part of the story of Bobby Bowden at Florida State, but the book never dives deep into any of these areas.Overall, I was a little bit disappointed in the book. It does a fairly good job of honing in on the 1977 season, but there is not a lot of substance to the book other than game highlights and a story hear or there. If you want a quick read that will give you an idea of how Florida State football got started, then this book will do the job, but, if you want a deep analysis on how Florida State developed and changed over the years under Bobby Bowden, you may want to look elsewhere.

I am not a Florida State fan, but I am a huge college football fan and I love how this book goes through the details on how Bowden built this program. I am not finished reading it yet, but it is very interesting.

You can never really know how tempted you will be to sell during a crisis.This book provides the knowledge necessary for investors to choose their asset allocations, and most importantly, to be able to justify their asset allocations to themselves. The author details which investments belong in a portfolio, and which do not, using a variety of factors. Understanding the justifications for their investment choices asset allocations will give investors the conviction to stay the course during bear markets, rather than sell in a panic.

This is a great book. Boiled down, it says that equities drive returns but that investors (individuals, endowments, etc.) can't stand the volatility. To address this, the book goes over what the author thinks are the best equity assets for driving returns and the best assets for reducing volatility and protecting against inflation, deflation, and panic. The latter is designed to buck you up and prevent you from selling at the bottom and locking in your losses when things get dicey, which they will from time to time.The book gives you general ideas for a framework in evaluating assets to be included in your portfolio but, despite giving some general recommendations as to the portfolio composition, doesn't give a lot of specific advice. This seemingly disappoints some. However, if you understand why you have one asset or another it shouldn't be hard to decide what works best for your situation. For example, there has been a lot of discussion as to what duration treasury bonds the author suggests. If you understand that the bonds are designed to protect against deflation and panic, then you should be able to determine for yourself what the duration should be (e.g., if you're 85 years old you shouldn't be concerned about purchasing power in 30 years). Likewise, if you're 85 years old you probably want to have more bonds that the recommended portfolio since you shouldn't be as concerned about returns over the next 50 years. Managing a retirement account for an individual is different than managing a portfolio for a university with an almost unlimited time horizon. The author makes this clear in numerous ways, though the language may be more academic than most investing guides.In this regard, some may find William Bernstein or Ric Edelman more accessible. David Swensen may be more insightful in parsing the various asset classes but they have a more folksy approach using more examples -- people often find induction works better than deduction. My advice would be to start with Edelman, move to Bernstein, and then read this book. The message isn't all that different, but ultimately your investing is a personal journey and the more ways of understanding the issues the better prepared you will be for tackling the job. Plus repetition never hurts!

David Swensen has clearly had success investing. I think that is indisputable. His advice is relatively sound, but I find it to be too hand-wavy in some cases and too general to provide useful information to anyone who has spent their time roving Bogleheads or MMM. The most informative thing I found was his explanation on why he invests exclusively in US Treasury bonds instead of junk/corporate bonds. The information on active vs. index funds has been beaten to death, but for a beginner this is all still good information. I could do without the various conspiracy-like comments on how the government is in bed with various industries and how they're screwing over the middle class because that's not why I'm reading the book. I also found his asset allocation strategy to be very... closed-minded. Maximum of 35% of a portfolio in any section? And a minimum of 10%? So I go 10% bonds, 10% REITs because I'm very young and want to max my stock contribution, but then I have 80% to split between US and international stocks, which I can't do because I max out at 35% per category. His only mention of how to allocate the percentages was to look at your risk factors and decide what you can stomach. So in conclusion, this book is all information you could find on various sites on the internet (though this is a very compact package of information) and targeted towards older, more conservative investors. His advice should not be followed by everyone, but his advice is sound and easily followed.

What I didn't like about this book is the dated premise of actively managed mutual funds. But what I did like about this book is that it explains the investment world in an easy to understand fashion with exact examples. The author did a great job of explaining the premise of a well-rounded portfolio. I would recommend this book to any beginning student of investing.

This book serves as an excellent tool to the world of investing in mutual funds. Written in plain English so that anyone who is interested in investing can understand what the author is saying. It also exposes the mutual fund business as one in which the investor is behind the eight ball so to speak. But it is a valuable reference for the average investor in today fund driven world.
