I introduce my preschoolers (ages 3-5) to Sunshine on My Shoulders a few months before we invite the grandparents to our Grandparents Day in the spring. By the time we have the grandparents join us for a morning of fun, the children know the words to the song/book. After a morning full of assorted activities, we have circle time. The children and their guests all sit around the classroom ready to read a story. I introduce the story, put on the CD, and as the music is played, the children and grandparents join in singing the song. I see Grandmas hugging their grandchild a little tighter, many of them with tears of love flowing down their cheeks, as I turn the pages of the book. I chose Sunshine on My Shoulders because the grandparents grew up knowing the music of John Denver, especially Sunshine on My Shoulders. For the kids, it is a slower song and they can keep up with it better than the other songs/books by John Denver.
The watercolors are exquisite. My personal favorite is the dandelion-fluff page ("if I had a wish that I could wish for you"), but there are lots of subtle touches (the people in the illustrations resemble John Denver and his son, there is a shadow of the boy on the first page next to the ladybugs, and I can't tell you how many times we've stopped to admire the water ripples and the boat and the cats...).The CD contains 2 songs: a round called "The Music is You" which makes a great intro (and the words are written in a circle, helping kids remember that the song is a round... get it?), and then "Sunshine on My Shoulders," which is probably a 1990's recording (I'm guessing around the time of the Wildlife Concert) with really great recording clarity, a sax solo that sort of adds a soothing-Kenny-G-influence, and Denver's voice matured to a mellow depth that will make you smile and cry all at once it is so beautiful. Probably one of my top 10 children's books, and I have a lot of them.
This book is a lovely, gentle, sunny accompaniment to a beautiful song. As a preschool teacher, I ladd music to everything we do as often as I possibly can. As a music teacher, I add books--literacy!--as often as I possibly can. This works both ways. And the way the illustrator handled the lyric "sunshine almost always makes me high" is brilliant! (She is swinging! That is NOT what John Denver was talking about back then. Just sayin'.)
I was so excited to find this book. This song was used as my wedding processional in 1971 so I was happy to find it as an example of the "from-song-to-book" genre. As an elementary teacher for 36 years, I know children learn easily from songs. My 2 year-old grand-daughter loves the bright, charming pictures and I am pleased to be able to share this memorable song with her. My collection of song-to-book editions is growing!

If you think this is just a sing-a-long book, think again! The true beauty of this book is the artwork. Even if there were no words printed inside, the art alone makes this one of the most beautiful picture books for children I've ever seen. I have given it as a gift twice, but when I recently learned I was having my first grandchild I immediately bought one for myself. I love the larger, paper-page version just for its size, but the board book version would be wonderful for a toddler. Even if you never heard of John Denver or never liked his music, the simplicity of the words without being sung make a beautiful poem that any child can learn. In fact, now that I think of it -- I think I'll also order the board book!
Only after playing the CD one day, the children have it down. We love the song and the pictures!
