Loved this book. Didn't want to put it down also I loved it because it was no foul language and no sex in it.
Fascinating history lesson in the guise of a fictional story. Wonderfully developed characters with a bold storyline. Could not put it down. Ended up reading all the books in the collection. Highly recommend if you love historical romance. Gave a new on-site to American history that school never did or could.
I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next book in this series. It had it all....wealthy family, insanity, Hollywood, gangsters, bootleggers, early 1900's, romance and drama.
I struggled with this book. Good story, thoughtfully plotted, and interesting enough to keep me slogging through the illiteracies. It's a bodice-ripper, but an interesting one, as it's the same woman's bodice getting ripped throughout. But: How could this book *possibly* be shortlisted for a statewide prize?The book read like parts of it were competently edited -- dozens of pages at a time read like they were written by a native English speaker -- and parts apparently hadn't even been given a second glance by the author. Hobos don't "lay in the gutter" unless they have a job laying tile (or eggs); the *lie* in the gutter. Is the upper Midwest where the English language goes to die? Awkward, voyeuristic sex scenes were the worst -- Amanda, couldn't bring yourself to read again? Two glaring errors on page 246. Many "throw Mama from the train a kiss"-type errors: ..."Haydn appeared at the lodge full of apologies..." Here's Griff ravishing our heroine (page 279): "I going to be here for you always..."Reviewers: please tell us the truth!
Amanda, you've done it yet again!!I love the way she writes. Her stories are gripping. This was even more than the last. Her tales doesn't drag, doesn't use a phrase repeatedly. She really write well. As someone from Minnesota, I know some history of the Twin Cities, been to or around some of settings. Amanda does her research well, and keeps you lured in her story.Thanks for another amazing tale. Keep writing, I'll keep reading.
A young lady, struggling with family problems, with no worry about money, finds it necessary to start over. Vaudeville was already showing signs of meeting its demise, while movies were beginning to experience rapid growth as technology improved and the “talkies†were not far away. A young man exposes her to the world of theater and she finds herself drawn into the fascinating realm of makeup. She not only learned makeup, but learned how to transform characters which led her into the pursuit of establishing herself and starting her own cosmetic company. Sound mediocre so far? But wait...there’s more. Her relationships seem to fall flat all around her...she meets a bootlegger (prohibition was in full effect) who wants her to start adding perfume to her line of makeup, so he can ship alcohol under the guise of supplies for perfume manufacture. She also begins to learn even more secrets from her family’s past.There is some foreign intrigue added and if I told you much more, you wouldn’t have to read it. Despite a few gaffs in proofreading, missing it would be a shame, for this is a really good read with colorful characters sprinkled throughout.
This is the first book I have read by Amanda Hughes and thoroughly enjoyed it. I understand this was her first novel. It was based in Minnesota which was a bonus! Can’t wait to read the next one.

What happens over the next 18 years is the interesting and engrossing saga of The Looking Glass Goddess by Amanda Hughes.I've read a number of Ms. Hughes' books and they all have the following attributes in common.They are all lengthy.They are all well written and well researched.They are all detailed and descriptive.They all have well developed characters.They all have a happy ending, but not before having a great deal of sorrow.The Looking Glass Goddess did not disappoint.If you are willing to take your time and be patient, then you really should enjoy this novel. It completely immerses you into the early 29th century society, subcultures and even Hollywood. It is truly an entertaining book.Content alert: There is some moderate swearing (including religious expletives), but no “F†bombs. There is some passionate kissing and some referred-to intimacy, but no detailed sexual content.
