Review
"Allen writes in a sharp, lively voice that is full of warmth and humor...Tabitha and her friends are well-drawn, and it is the dynamic between the protagonist and the women in her life that propels the story. Touching on issues of professional womanhood, race, and family, the author crafts a novel that is both timely and enjoyable." - Kirkus Reviews"...Allen crafts an engaging and evenly plotted story of a woman who, after learning that she has only a limited window in which to have children, evaluates her relationships and personal aspirations. Allen explores the themes of racial prejudice, infidelity, and family dynamics in this voice-driven work...readers will readily connect with her search for fulfillment on her journey of self-discovery." - The BookLife Prize"I love a book with strong female characters. I love reading about women at their best, supporting each other emotionally, financially, psychologically and culturally and this book just served me a whole series of 'Girlfriends!'" - Dora Okey, Nilichosoma Book Blog"This gem is a hidden treasure. So satisfied I took the chance on this novel and new to me author." - NetGalley Reviewer (5-star review)"This was a sometimes emotional, sometimes funny look into the life of a young urban professional, just trying to live her best life, despite life itself getting in the way of that. An enjoyable read!" - NetGalley Reviewer (4-star review)

From the Author
I wrote Black Girls Must Die Exhausted to show that love is the language that we all speak and the very lifeblood of our existence. Love comes in many forms-- self-love, love between friends, familial love and romantic love, amongst them. In fact, this book itself is my love letter - to you, to black women, to women and to all those who understand the beauty that comes through struggle and the benefit of doing their own work to heal, to understand, to grow, and most importantly, to love more fully.Quality Black Books, the publisher of Black Girls, or BGMDE (my preference for an abbreviated reference), was established to provide a necessary expansion of the traditional publishing industry. There is a need for more diverse voices in literature with the freedom and leeway to write undiluted perspectives for more diverse audiences. Quality Black Books is that leeway and that conduit between an overlooked audience of readers and the books they'd like to see more of. We don't just need more diverse books, we need more diverse perspectives with the expectation and acknowledgment of a more diverse audience. Much thanks and appreciation to everyone who played a role in the creation and success of this book: to our team of remarkable editors tirelessly proofing for misplaced commas, to our early readers providing feedback and pushback when necessary, and to the incredible artists who contributed to the visual representation of the words and ideas of the story - you are appreciated!Â

I happen to be a man and I realize that this book might not have been intended for me. I have to admit the title intrigued me enough to pick up a copy. I usually don't write reviews, but I so thoroughly enjoyed this book, I wanted to encourage others to take the same journey that I did. It's not often that you find a fresh and unique black cultural perspective reflected in fiction, and this book absorbed me into the story, introducing me to characters I not only grew to care about, but whom I learned from. The story was so engaging that I went from being curious to not being able to put the book down. When I reached the last page, I felt like I had found a new friend that I'd miss. Now, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I'll be very happy to revisit the characters. In retrospect, I'd view this as a lighter and very 2018 version of "Waiting to Exhale." The story is fresh and touches on contemporary issues that women, and specifically black women now find themselves dealing with. I found very human and relatable characters whose lives are affected by but not defined by race.Highly recommend.
I didn't get past chapter 3. I think the idea of the book is both refreshing to and needed for modern day black women. However, it may have been rushed. Maybe the focus was more on getting it done than getting it done well. I tried to push through but I couldn't. There was just one grammatical error that broke the camel's back. For me, books are not just for entertainment, they are tools used to expand my mind and thinking. If a book is published with grammatical errors and "elementary" words, I remain stagnant or even recede.
Not what i expected. Very disappointed. Finished the book even when i didn’t want to because i spent money on it. It’s about a mixed girl who was raised by her white grandmother. Uses “not all cops†rhetoric.
I absolutely loved this book! The characters seemed to jump off the page...they were so real. I was especially drawn to Tabitha and her grandmother. I even find myself thinking about them from time to time, long after I finished the book.Tabitha’s journey is one to which many single professional women can relate. The dating woes, ticking clock, and desire for a promotion touched home. What really touched me, however, was the relationships Tabitha had with her friends and family. Relationships filled with humor, love, compassion, and life lessons. This book definitely takes you on an emotional rollercoaster! There were lots of great surprises in the storyline. The book was exceptionally well-written and polished, as well.Bravo, Jayne Allen! I can’t wait to read the sequel, especially since you left us hanging at the end! 😊
It was a slow start for me. There were some grammatical/punctuation errors which annoyed me at times. I loved the characters and the life lessons. This book will make you laugh and make you cry.
I received this book on a Tuesday night and devoured it by Sunday! Before the first chapter ended i was crying and knew I landed myself into a great book. It reflected on the relevant things that happen in the black womens life from taming natural hair to look “presentableâ€, from depression, police interactions, the long waits at the beauty salon and compromising your very self for “the right manâ€. I laughed, cried, even got angry and didn’t read it for a day but at the end I was satisfied to be able to relate to all aspects of this book. Very very well done!
This book was very eye opening to the world of professional black women and the trials they face every day. The book is enlightening. At times you will be rejoicing and other times you will be holding back the tears. The characters are so well described they could be your friend, aunt, grandma, mother, etc. This is a great read I can't wait to read the sequel.
