I was disappointed in this book. The reviews I read said it was a book used by school counselors and other therapists.... I find this hard to believe. Not that the book was bad, it just does not cover much at all on alcoholic/drug dependent parents (which was on the front cover). In fact I bought this book for my teenage grand daughter, read the book myself, and do not feel she would gain from reading it at all. I had hoped there would have been more advice for teens on how to deal with abusive and/or alcoholic parents. I felt for the cost of the book (I purchased used) it felt well under any expectations I had.
As a school counselor in a high school, I have used this book (and its previous edition) many times. Having a parent with mental illness is a tremendous challenge and burden for teens. This book provides practical strategies for teens and speaks with a voice that is clear and compassionate. It is a phenomenal resource and support.
This is an excellent book for all of the reasons described in the other reviews. As a counselor, I recommend this book to my clients who have teens. The purpose of this review is to let fellow amazon customers know that a NEW UPDATED EDITION of this book is available through other sellers for $18.17 (at the time of this writing). The updated version has a slightly different title, but per the table of contents, contains all of the material in this book, addresses the abusive, alcoholic, and mentally ill parent, and includes additional helpful information. At the time of this writing, book sellers have the older, first edition of this book priced at over $200 (softcover) and over $2,000 (hardcover). A lot of books on troubled family members - whether it is a parent with a mental illness, an abusive partner, a child with substance abuse problems - end up focusing on the person with the primary problem. Just like in real life, the attention is drawn to the biggest chaos and the loudest noise, putting the reader - who is seeking help - in a secondary role, and sometimes all you are left with, is the part of understanding therapist.This book focuses solely on the children of troubled parents, their feelings and thoughts. It gives specific advise on how they can better cope with what they are experiencing, both short-term and later in life. By only touching lightly on the type of problems parents may experience and the erratic behavior they may display, the author does not create a conflict of loyalty for the young reader. Children can read the book and focus on their own feelings and reactions, which they may sorely need living under the circumstances described.The language is simple, maybe a little childish for the oldest teens, but the concepts are sometimes complicated and a stretch for the younger ones. Older children and teens cover such a range in development and it is difficult to speak to them as a group. I think this book has succeeded in reaching them all.
